Pati's Place Updated May 3, 2008

Life is getting back to normal again.  Last night I listed 4 new auctions, 2 of my beads and 2 for Johnny.  I gave the buyers the chance to "buy it now" and I will probably use that option more.  Two of the auctions have already sold so I will post a picture of the bead below. I have lots of magnificent cane that I will be using in some of my beads.  It is a change for me and has added a new spark to my beadmaking life.  I'm in the process of making a set of beads for eBay.  It's been forever since I have listed a set.  When you make focals only and start making small beads again, it is like starting over.  It takes me awhile to get into the "small" mood and really get the hang of it.  Look for lots of new styles from me i the near future.

We had a wonderful trip but it is time to get back to work.  Here is a picture of the bead that sold....I called it Murano 101.  Have a wonderful weekend! :-) Pati

March 31, 2008

Yesterday, we (not the class) spent a day on the little island of St. Erasmo. This is the island where all of the vegetables are grown for Venice and Murano. It is a beautiful little island and we walked all around for a couple of hours. We stopped at a friend's tower house and had a glass of locally made wine.

This is the tower house. It is very small but lots of rooms going up.

Had to take a picture of the local UPS truck in Venice

After we walked around S. Erasmo, we went to another island called Vinegola. SP. We had a wonderful lunch of rabbit at the restaurant below.

More Pictures later!

The first 2 classes are over and I am spending a few days relaxing. I picked up some kind of cold bug and I hope to rest it off before the 3 day Master class on Wednesday. I have some great pictures but I will post them later as I am ready to get some sleep now.

Hope you had a great weekend!

March 26, 2008 Murano

Hi There,

Today I taught the first day of the first class. There are people in my class from England, Australia, Belgium, Israel, and Canada. Nice combination. The class is a treat for me as each student is very outgoing and interesting. I did not take any pictures but I will tomorrow. We will have more time as we will be staying in Murano for the next few days. It makes more sense than commuting by boat for an hour each morning and night. But I really can't complain because I am in Venice and the only way to get around is by foot or boat. Today it was glorious outside and hopefully tomorrow will be the same. The weather forecast calls for rain but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Hope you are warm and dry!

March 25, 2008 Venice

Today was a free day and we spent it in Venice. We walked and walked and walked some more. I took tons of pictures today so I will show them to you in no particular order. Tomorrow we have to wake up very early to catch a boat to Murano and be there by 9:30am. That is about 8 boat stops from the Arsenale. I will try to update daily with pictures.

Below is a picture of the Grand Canal.

Below is the front of the church in San Marco Square. The last time I was here, this church was covered in scaffolding. It really is a beautiful sight.

Well, I hope you enjoyed the pictures. I will post again soon!

March 24, 2008

Ciao,

We are having a blast in Venice and Murano. We are rested and have had so much fun hanging out here. Our luggage arrived the day after we arrived here and that was a huge relief. We went to Murano on Saturday, not knowing where to go for the workshops but going to Murano anyway. We got off at the Colonna boat stop and started walking up a street. I was hoping I would recognize someone. Then, I see a man outside of a glass shop and recognized him. It was Caesare Toffolo. He is a very well-known borosilicate artist that I have met several times in Murano in the past. I asked, "Caesare?" He said "yes". I re-introduced myself and we talked for awhile and he walked with us down the street and we said our farewells. Johnny asked, "Did you bring the paperwork or a phone number?" Of course, I said, "No". Then I said, "I'm sure they will find us. Johnny bet me $50 that we wouldn't find anyone. We had a nice lunch and started walking up some streets and over bridges. Then I heard someone call to me, "Pati, you're here!" Then another walked up to me and said, "Hi, I'm Quinton". Quinton is the person who set up, Murano Magic, the workshop that I am teaching with other International artists and students. Johnny owes me 50 bucks. My first 2 classes start on Wednesday, March 26th.

Sunday was Easter and we spent it with my sister, her friend Barbara, and her family. We went to a traditional restaurant and had a traditional Venetian Easter dinner. It was so wonderful to spend a special day with family. Boy, do they have great food. Our Easter dinner lasted over 4 hours. I lost track of the courses of food. Some of the best I have ever eaten. About Cosi.......she was under the weather for about 2 days but she is fine now and she goes everywhere with me.

Today is Easter Monday. It is also a holiday. We went to Murano to hang out with the students and Johnny and I each did a demo. The place where I am teaching is actually owned by the owner of Vetrofond, Mr. Moretti. Quinton is renting the studio, which is a new teaching facility and Vetrofond is supplying the glass. Everything is here and the teaching space is really nice. Here is my first picture of a canal in Murano from one of the windows in the studio..

Here is another view:

Here is a picture of Johnny doing a demo, and of me doing a demo:

This is me standing outside of my Sister's Studio (where we are staying). See the 2 blue & white poles? Her studio overlooks the canal and those poles. It is located at the area called Arsenale. The accommodations at my sisterella's are as good as it gets. I will take pics soon.

The next picture Johnny took was of a boat in the canal. He is crazy about this boat. OK.

He is crazy about wood boats. Here are a few more sunset in Murano pics and a picture of a street in Venice.

The weather here has been very cold. Today, the sun came out for awhile but it was mostly gray. But I'll take a gray day in Venice or Murano anytime.

Tomorrow is a free day for us so I will try to get more pictures of Venice and Cosi. Have a great week and come back often.

December 17, 2007

Here are some of the pictures I was telling you about.

This is me outside in the back of the house.

Below is another view from the other side.

Here is Sarah and the trees.

Above is Sarah's beautiful studio. I wish I had a before shot. The studio is one of the nicest I have ever seen. Each side is lined with mirrors so that the students can watch the teacher work from their own station.

The picture above is the same picture AFTER the debris was removed. You are looking at the back of the house. Talk about an OPEN HOUSE. The good news is that the studio will be larger and the back (which was an office) will have a sliding door so that more light will shine in. In the end, Sarah will have an even nicer setup.

These are just a few pictures of the damage. The storm is over, the cleanup has started, and I look forward to returning to Maui to teach again under normal conditions. Even after all that happened, I have some really nice memories of a beautiful island.

December14, 2007

Johnny and I returned yesterday from Maui. What an experience that was. When we arrived, Tuesday night, it was raining and Sarah (our hostess and owner of Aloha Beads) said that she thought that a hurricane was heading our way. The next morning we had no electricity and we drove to Costco to buy generators for the bead class that was to start on Friday. We drove into town at about 11am. We bought the generators and returned to Sarah's house but were stopped before we got there as the road was blocked. We couldn't go to her house so we drove up to one of the student's house and stayed there for the night. The next morning we drove up to Sarah's and that is when the chaos started. Her house was one of the worst hit. There were some homes that were lost. A huge wall of water, mud and debris hit her house and her neighbor's. The neighbors kitchen and living room was crushed against Sarah's studio and kitchen. There were trees in her kitchen and 8 to 10 inches of mud and logs up against her house. The neighbors house was destroyed inside and she narrowly escaped with her 3 children. For the next 2 days, Johnny and some friends of Sarah's moved her furniture (that didn't get destroyed) into a rented storage place in town and Sarah and I packed her food and clothes, etc. The neighbor, who worked on cars, had 2 - 5 gallon drums of used motor oil in their garage and it all emptied into Sarah's studio, kitchen, and living room. It was an oil mudbath. We saw it on the news that night. The national guard showed up, left business cards, and left. Soooo, the class at her beautiful studio was out of the question.

We were offered and stayed at one of Sarah's friend's cottage. It was a life saver for us. Sarah, Johnny and I stayed there and it was great. Thank you so much Danielle! One of the students in my class called and offered her garage studio and we were able to fit in 4 torches (and hers) and had sort of a class. Her husband has a beautiful Hot Glass shop in Makawao called Hot Island Glass (they were glass people and they understood our situation). Thank you again Hillary and Chris for letting us use your garage studio. Without that, we would not have had a class. I did demos the first day and we had a class the next day and part of Monday. Two of the students had to cancel the class and leave the island due to the storm, so we had 4 students. The fact that we made it happen was a feat in itself. We were so lucky that we left to go into town to get the generators. If we stayed, we could have been seriously injured or worst. I took lots of pictures and I plan to post some of them here when I finish downloading them.

Johnny, Sarah, and I did our vacationing the last 2 days of our trip. We had a special day visiting her friends who have a beautiful place near twin falls. We also got to see the Maui aquarium and I have plans to make a special fish murrine in the very near future.

I will say that I hope to return to Maui to teach again. I got to meet some wonderful people and Sarah is one of the nicest people on earth. Thank you Corinne, Spencer, Rich, Terry, Hillary, Chris, and Danielle. That's about it in a nutshell.

I will post pictures later. Have a wonderful weekend.

Take care,

Pati & Johnny

I wanted to share with you the recent work that I have been doing. I have been making PMC caps for the past week. Then, I have used the caps and lined my beads. Here is a picture of some of the beads that I have finished. I am having a blast working with the silver and have all kinds of ideas for more large holed beads.

I will be listing some of these this week on eBay. Also, please check out my auction that I have listed now.

Have a great week!

Pati & Johnny O

I have to mention this wonderful artist that I found on eBay. I bought an 8 x 10 painting of my dog Cosi (cozy) and it is so wonderful. I will post a link to her auctions. Here is the picture that she did of the picture on the bottom of this page.

This picture captures the exact look of my darling dog. I can't wait to get more paintings from her. Her eBay name is brushwithfineart and here is the link: http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZbrushwithfineart

I can't say enough good things about Sharon.

I took lots of pictures and really have to download them. I will post some of them here. Also, have to get back on the torch today. I'm working on a new press from Cattwalk.

Have a wonderful day! Pati

Cozy and the buck.....
